The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenceman Mark Streit to a one-year contract. Per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, the deal is worth $700,000 in salary and $300,000 in potential bonuses. Streit split last season between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. At the trade deadline, he was traded from Philadelphia to Tampa Bay. The Lightning would quickly flip him to Pittsburgh, where he was part of the Stanley Cup Champions.

Montreal Canadiens Sign Mark Streit to One-Year Contract
The 39-year-old played in 68 games last season, scoring six goals and 21 assists for 27 points. He also played in three playoff games, picking up two assists during Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup Playoff run.
In 11 NHL Seasons, the Swiss-born Streit has scored 96 goals and 338 assists for 434 points in 784 career NHL games. He has played for the Canadiens, Flyers, Penguins and New York Islanders. Streit was originally drafted by the Canadiens in the 2004 NHL Draft. He was taken in the ninth round, 262nd overall. Streit played three years for the Habs before leaving as a free agent in the summer of 2009.
With the move, the Canadiens now have $8,462,000 in cap space remaining for the 2017-18 season, according to salary cap website, capfriendly. Defenceman Andrei Markov remains an unrestricted free agent. It remains to be seen if Streit is seen as a replacement for Markov, or just another piece of depth for the Habs.
On the international stage, Streit has long been part of the Swiss National team. He played at the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Championships, has made 14 World Championship appearances, played in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and the last four Winter Olympics.
