The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed defencemen Josh Morrissey to a two-year deal worth $6.3 million or $3.15 million per season AAV. This contract carries him through the 2019-20 season. He will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at that time.

Josh Morrissey Re-Signs with the Jets

Morrissey has spent his entire three-year career with the Winnipeg Jets. He has put up 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 career points in 164 career games. Morrissey was originally drafted in the first round, 13th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Jets.

Last season, he scored seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points in 81 games. He also added 47 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 50.6 percent Corsi with a relative Corsi of -1 percent. This was his best year in the NHL so far. During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Morrissey had one goal and one assist 16 games as the Jets went to the Western Conference Final. This was Morrissey’s first time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Morrissey is coming off of his three-year entry-level contract worth $4.275 million with an AAV of $1,363,333. He signed his entry-level contract in October 2013.

What This Means for the Future

Morrissey who averages about 20 and a half minutes plays in the Jets top four. He is normally paired with Jacob Trouba. Morrissey also led the Jets this year in blocked shots with 168. This was tied for 12 in the NHL with Washington Capitals defencemen Brooks Orpik. Known for his puck-moving and scoring in junior, Morrissey has focused on being more of a defensive player for the Jets. At only 23 years old, Morrissey will look to continue to play strong defensively, and also add a bit more offence to his game for the Jets in the next few seasons.
