Ottawa Senators Trade Mark Stone to Vegas

Mark Stone brings elite goal scoring to the Golden Knights. This year Stone has scored 28 goals and 62 points. He has posted a Corsi for of 52.3%. In his career Stone has scored 123 goals and 311 points in 366 games. Stone transforms Vegas into an immediate playoff threat. Vegas is looking to go on another playoff run after their unlikely run to the finals in their inaugural season.

The Winnipeg native was drafted by the Senators in the sixth round, 178 overall, in the 2010 NHL draft. Stone is a pending UFA at the end of the season. The 26-year-old is entering into the prime of his career. He looks like he will surpass the 30 goal plateau for the first time in his career this season. This, after scoring at least 20 five years in a row. Stone has agreed to an extension with Vegas for eight years with an AAV of around $9M. The deal can only be announced March 1st.

What this Means for the Future

The Senators are at the beginning of a major rebuild. The Sens are stripping it down to the studs this year. With Stone now traded, the Sens have moved their top three scorers this season. They have already traded Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel at this deadline and all world Erik Karlsson in the offseason.

The Senators have been stockpiling draft picks and prospects to start the rebuild. Erik Brunnstrom is a high-end offensive defenceman. He has drawn some comparisons to Karlsson early in his development.
