The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Ottawa Senators centre Jean-Gabriel Pageau has been suspended one game. This is his first career suspension and he will miss tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau Suspended

Pageau has been suspended one game for an incident with Vancouver Canucks defenceman Ashton Sautner. Pageau delivered a hit from behind as Sautner was retrieving a puck in the corner. The Ottawa native got a minor penalty for boarding on the play. He ended the night with two assists.

He has scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points this season. Pageau has also added four minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 47.5 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of +0.4 percent.

Pageau has spent his entire career with the Sens. He has put up 62 goals and 78 assists for 140 career points in 360 career games. Ottawa originally drafted him in the fourth round, 96th overall of the 2011 NHL Draft.

What This Means for the Future

Pageau has only played in 31 games so far this year after suffering an Achilles injury in the pre-season. So far this season, Pageau has played on the Sens top line with Brady Tkachuk and now Max Veronneau. The 26-year-old centre has another year left on his current contract, and he will look to stay healthy next season. He can produce 15-20 goals like he did in 2015-16. Expect Pageau to be one of the key parts to the Sens rebuild next season.

Chris Tierney will likely replace Pageau on the Sens top line for tonight’s game. Tierney has nine goals and 37 assists for 46 points this season. Centre Colin White will also draw into the lineup with Pageau out for the game. Pageau is eligible to return to the Sens lineup on Saturday Night in Edmonton.
