The Los Angeles Kings have signed goaltender Jack Campbell to a 2-year extension worth $3.3 million, or $1.65 million per season. Campbell was set to become a UFA at the end of next season.

Jack Campbell Staying With the Kings

Over his four-year NHL career, Campbell has played for Los Angeles Kings as well as making one start in a Dallas Stars uniform. He has put up a 12-15-3 career record in 38 career appearances with 30 career starts. He also has a 2.41 goals against average, .925 save percentage, and two shutouts. Campbell was originally drafted 11th overall by the Stars in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Last season, Campbell played in 31 games with 25 starts for the Kings. He put up a 10-14-1 record with a 2.30 goals against average and .928 save percentage and two shutouts.

What This Means for the Future

The 27-year old netminder is coming off his first full season in the NHL as he played the back-up role. Looking at next season, Campbell will be the back-up to Jonathan Quick in L.A. When Quick went down last year, Campbell was called up and despite putting up a losing record still managed to have a solid year in the Kings net. With Quick’s injuries starting to catch up to him, expect Campbell and Quick to split starts this coming season.┬áIt will be interesting to see how the Kings decide to split up the starts over the course of the campaign.

The move allows Cal Petersen to spent another few years in the AHL developing. He will be the starter once again for the Ontario Reign. Petersen was one of four goalies who saw time in the Kings net last season along with Quick, Campbell, and Peter Budaj. He would make four starts with the team going 5-4-1 with a 2.61 goals-against average,.924 save percentage and one shutout.
