The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to terms with RFA defenceman Ivan Provorov.  Provorov will be with the Flyers for the foreseeable future as he signed a 6-year deal worth $40.5 million. This is an AAV of 6.75.

Ivan Provorov Re-Signs With Philadelphia Flyers

After being drafted seventh overall in 2015, it was almost expected that Provorov would join the Flyers directly out of camp. He would end up heading back to the Brandon Wheat Kings for his second season in the WHL. Provorov would finish among the top five scorers on the team and highest defenseman with 73 points. That was a 12 point jump from the 61 points he posted the year before.

It then became a no-brainer that he would join the Flyers the following season. And he impressed during his first season in the NHL. He became a mainstay on the Flyers top pairing, reaching 30 points in his rookie season. He followed that up with 41 points the next season. This came while playing in all 82 games both seasons.

Potential Remains Despite Down Season

Provorov was quickly establishing himself as a top defenceman on the top with the potential to be recognized league-wide. The potential is still there, but it may have dwindled a little after this past season. It was a trying season for Provorov, as well as the whole team.

While Provorov continued to be a workhouse, the struggles became evident in his third season in the league. The goals and points totals dropped immensely from his first two seasons. He finished with seven goals and 19 assists. His 26 points were the lowest he had posted in a Flyers uniform.

Despite some of the negatives, Provorov still led the team in ice time, averaging a little over 25 minutes a game. He also has yet to miss an NHL game during his three-year career. He was also prominent in all situations on the ice.

It is very early in the career of Ivan Provorov to make any guarantees on his future. What can be said, however, is that he is one of the hardest-working players in the Flyers organization.
