When Yegor Korshkov was drafted 31st overall in 2016, no one knew what to expect from the lanky Russian forward. The Toronto Maple Leafs had gone off the board to draft him, passing over future NHL stars like Alex DeBrincat to do so. The Leafs were ridiculed by many for having gone for a guy that many saw as a later round pick, and who was completely passed over in the 2015 NHL Draft. But the Leafs saw something in Korshkov when no one else did. They saw the potential he could bring to the table if he were to be given the right opportunity.
Fast forward a few years later and the Leafs efforts to draft him are looking like they about to pay off. Korshkov is entering his first full season in North America while playing with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. In the Marlies first game of the season, Korshkov put up a goal and an assist while playing solid minutes.
The Potential of Yegor Korshkov
The Leafs really liked what they saw from Korshkov in training camp, as he was one of the very last cuts. He is starting to catch the eyes of more people around the hockey world. Let’s look at what Korshkov brings to the Leafs organization:
Size is one of the biggest things that Korshkov brings to the Leafs organization. Korshkov is 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. The Leafs are a team known for their small, speedy forwards so having a player like Korshkov will help out a lot.
Korshkov loves to use his big frame to play a grinding game. He excels at grinding away the opposition’s defense into giving away the puck so he can set up his teammates in front of the net. Korshkov’s frame also helps out in front of the net. He is very good at screening the goalie while his teammates are shooting, creating high danger scoring chances.
Even though Korshkov may not be known for his offence, he can still a reliable offensive producer. Korshkov had 65 points in 172 career games in the KHL while continually being pushed down the lineup. This year, in his first season in North America, he is off to a good start. Even though he has only played one game with the Marlies, he has a goal and an assist already. He has adjusted well to the smaller North American ice and looks poised for a breakout season.
Future Looks Bright
A few years ago, the Maple Leafs took a chance on Korshkov without knowing if he would ever come overseas. He is finally here and the Leafs think Korshkov has the size and skills to be a solid NHL player for a very long time.
