The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Dallas Stars right winger Corey Perry has been suspended for five games. This is his second career suspension.

Corey Perry Suspended

Corey Perry has been suspended for five games and fined for an incident with Ryan Ellis. Early in the first period of the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators Winter Classic game, Perry elbowed Ellis in the head. Ellis left the game of his own power but did not return. Perry was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.

So far this season, he scored three goals and 10 assists for 13 points. He also added 21 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 46.8 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -2.8.

Over his 15 year NHL career, Perry has played for the Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars. He has put up 375 goals and 414 assists for 789 career points in 1021 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, 28th overall of the 2003 NHL draft by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The suspension will be long enough to hold Perry out of January 9th’s game against the Ducks. This game would’ve marked the first time Perry played in Honda Center as a member of a different team. It was sure to be an emotional return, after his long tenure in Anaheim, but clearly those emotions will have to wait. There is one more meeting between Dallas and Anaheim this season after January 9th. Lucky for Perry, this matchup will also take place in Anaheim. This will give him his much sought-after homecoming, although he’ll need to remain patient.

Ellis has been placed on injured reserve as a result of the injury. The exact details of his injury have been kept quiet but many believe he could miss significant time. His placement on IR is seemingly a testament to this. To cope with his absence, Nashville has recalled Alexandre Carrier from their AHL program.
