This is podcast #21 for your listening pleasure. Today we are going to cover the Arizona Coyotes recruiting allegations and how it could affect the team. We also discuss the NHL trade deadline possibilities and the recent trade between the Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs. We will have our regular segments including, “this day in NHL history”, NHL top 16 rankings, games on the schedule, and finally… Real Movie Talk.

Arizona Coyotes Accused of Violating Recruiting Rules

We discuss the recent news that came out that the Arizona Coyotes have been accused of violating recruiting rules. Trying out recruits prior to the NHL Combine is against the rules. A fine could be charged to the team. Will they have to give up draft picks? The NHL is investigating and this could be a black mark on the team’s reputation and the new owner’s bank balance.

The league very clearly states that teams may not conduct any sort of physical tests before the combine. Craig Morgan reported that the league grew concerned with the participation of a strength and conditioning consultant, Tommy Powers, in these interviews. Additionally, the Coyotes reportedly requested that draft prospects attend these interviews wearing a T-shirt and shorts so team staff could “eyeball” their bodies. Morgan’s sources contended that the Coyotes did not take any measurements or request any physical tests during these interviews.

Speaking of the Coyotes again, we discuss the possibilities of the team keeping Taylor Hall or trading him if they fall out of playoff contention. Should the Yotes consider trading Antti Raanta? Will they ever get healthy?

NHL Trade Deadline

Greg helps us to understand what the motivation was for the Kings to trade Kyle Clifford to Toronto. Losing Jack Campbell means the Kings are relying on young Calvin Petersen to take over the backup goalie spot. William asks Greg if Petersen will be an adequate backup goalie or what the Kings plans are for him. The Kings are hoping that Trevor Moore will bring them a good return in this trade.

NHL Top 16 Rankings

Dave keeps us up to date on the NHL top 16 rankings and which teams are surging and which teams are not. One team who fell out of the top 16 was the Coyotes due to their recent below-par play.
