New York Islanders Comic Captions for 2019-20

Mathew Barzal

The Islanders know they have a good one in Mathew Barzal. His worth will be displayed as as the team realises that his entry-level years are over. He will certainly get a contract that’s worth his performance. The issue may be the salary cap restrictions seeing that if the cap stays put, the team will only have about $10 million in cap space with other players contracts expiring as well. His 2015-16 season was considered an entry-level slide due to his young age.

Barzal was the winner of the Calder Trophy in 2017-18, given to be the best rookie. He had 22 goals, 63 assists for 85 points in that season. His power play production was off the charts. He had five goals and an amazing 22 assists.

Over his short career he has 59 goals and 148 assists in 234 games. His playmaking ability helps his team every time he steps out on the ice. He followed up his rookie season with 62 and 60 points respectively. The pace for the current season was slowed due to the pandemic shortened season. He was scoring 0.88 points per game before the season halted.

Barzal is surely the future of the New York Islanders. He is an explosive skater and always a threat to test the opposing team’s defence.

Brock Nelson

Brock Nelson has been a solid performer over his seven-year career for the Islanders. His career marks are above average. He has participated in 548 games with 150 goals and 145 assists good for 295 points or 0.45 points per game.

It would seem for what the New York club is paying him with his six-year $36 million contract he signed in May of last year that he’d contribute more. The Isles are just not a good offensive team. They are ranked 24th in the NHL with just a 2.78 goals-per-game average.

Nelson did his share this season with 26 goals which tied his best output he had during the 2015-16 season when he played in 81 games. Most assuredly, he would have surpassed this had the season not been interrupted by a pandemic. He had 28 assists to give him a total of 54 points. He is a very accurate shooter with a career shooting percentage of 13 percent. It’s a no-brainer to get him the puck more often if the Isles want to improve their offence.

“Jonathan let me introduce you to the boards, you two were meant for each other.”

Anders Lee

Anders Lee is excellent forward on the Islanders’ team. The soon to be 30-year-old native of Edina, Minnesota signed a seven-year $49 million contract in July of last year. His career numbers show why the Isles wanted to keep him on their roster. In 493 games he has collected 172 goals and 129 assists for 301 points.

Lee, is a physical forward coming in at 6′-3″, 231 pounds. He has used that size to hand out 1.74 hits per game. In other words, if you see Lee coming your way you had better seek shelter.

This season he accumulated 20 goals, and 23 assists for 43 points in 68 games. Again, he like Nelson are great shooters with Lee gathering a career 13.5 percent shooting accuracy. With what the Isles gave both of these forwards considering their excellent shooting ability, the puck should be on their sticks more often.

With the Islanders facing an unpredictable Florida Panthers team, both Lee and Nelson need to hit the net turning on the red light with frequency.
